DFS replication over 70M files - doable?

from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773238%28v=ws.10%29.aspx#BKMK_00

What are the supported limits of DFS Replication?

The following list provides a set of scalability guidelines that have been tested by Microsoft on Windows Server 2012 R2:

  • Size of all replicated files on a server: 100 terabytes.
  • Number of replicated files on a volume: 70 million.
  • Maximum file size: 250 gigabytes.

We have 150 Million files but size is around 15TB. Anyone used DFS in WIN2012R2 in production? Was it working OK?

DFS-R folder resources Failed in Failover Cluster on Server 2008 R2

Maybe a week ago, 7 of our DFS-R Folder failover cluster resources lost their configuration data. In the resource list, they just show up as "()".

I've seen suggestions online that disabling the replicated folder will remove it from the Failover Cluster, and then re-enabling it will automatically add it back to the cluster. So, I've disabled it via the Connections tab, and that does nothing. The other option is to disable it under the Memberships tab...but that has consequences, and I would rather not do that if it isn't necessary.

I'm also now seeing event ID 5012's popping up in the DFS Replication logs every hour or so.

The DFS Replication service failed to communicate with partner etc etc. The partner did not recognize the connection or thereplication group configuration.

Error: 9026 (The connection is invalid)

Now, "dfsrdiag pollad /verbose" or "dfsrdiag pollad /mem:<dc name>" both come back as successful. And a DFS Diagnostic Report brings back nothing apparently relevant to this issue, other than one error concerning the same event ID 5012's.

Also, I've verified that it's not a DNS issue, pinging the home office DFS server from the site server resolves correctly, and vice versa. And the windows firewall is disabled on both servers. It's POSSIBLE that there is a network issue. Replication works fine between the site server and the 2nd cluster server service, just not between the site server and the 1st cluster server service. However, via netstat I see active connections between the site server and the cluster server, as well as the active cluster host (although, just a single connection to the clustered DFS server, but ~6 to the cluster host itself).

So, I'm completely at a loss here. Any recommendations?

Create DFS namespace fails on Member Server - Protected Users

    Hello,

we are in the process of implementing a more secure administration model.

One key feature we want to use is the protected users group.

Issue: create Namespace fails when using DFS GUI

If we use DFSutil or PowerShell everything works as expected.

However, when using the DFS Management GUI it does not work when working on a member server.

Error Message is: The namespace cannot be queried. access denied

In the event logs you can see a NTLM logon event that gets denied because the user is a member of the protected users group.

It does work when creating the Namespace on a domain controller.

Consequently if you remove the user form this group everything works as expected on the member server.

So the question is: how to enable kerberos authentication for the DFS management GUI

Forest and Domain level Windows 2012R2, all severs Windows 2012R2

Anyone has some experience regarding this issue?

    server 2012 DFSR

Hi, I am planning on setting up DFSR on a lot of branch sites. the plan is to replciate them to the main server in the data centre and backup this serve every night. The data we plan to migrate on the branch servers are home drives etc. What are best practices for doing this? Would I use a read only option on this as I wouldn't want someone to change the data in the data centre and then this replicate back down to the branch server!

    Thanks

    Thanks - Joe.

    Hi,

Server 2008 with a number of shadow copy points. I wish to move to location that the shadow copies are saved.

Currently it is on the same drive as the as the data it is "protecting".

Can this be done without losing the current ones?

    Cheers,

DFS V2 setting ABE with Powershell

    Hello everybody

we currently have a stand-alone DFS running on W2K8R2 without replication. Inside our central namespace the access based enumeration is enabled. In former times we create a dfs-share with dfscmd.exe for and used dfsutil.exe for setting the abe. This works very fine.

Now I tried this with powershell:

new-dfsnfolder creates the share as expected.

grant-dfsnaccess seems to works without an error.

But the share itself still has "use inheritance permissions from local filesystem" instead of "set explicit permissions on the dfs Folder" and is viewable for everybody. Switching inside the gui to "explicit permission" shows the permissions given with grant-dfsnaccess.

Has anybody an idea how to switch this Setting?

Windows 2012 R2 File Corrupt - Repair Volume Reports No Errors?!?

    Hi

I have a Windows 2012 R2 server with a volume connected to a HP SAN via iSCSI.

A single file on that volume is corrupt, attempting its deletion results in the following message:

An unexpected error is keeping you from deleting the file. If you continue to receive the error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

To fix this I ran the following powershell command: repair-volume -driveletter T -scan

    However this returned: NoErrorsFound

I also ran a third party application to do an online surface scan and no bad sectors were found.

How then do I delete this file?!?

    Thanks

    Andrew

    Hello,

I have an issue on a brand new and fresh installed Win 2012 R2 Standard (all updates applied). I get this error when trying to enable shadow copies on one big volume (65 TB spanned volume):

attach vhd access denied - but works in computer management

I'm running windows server 2008 r2 sp1. When I attach a VHD as read only via Computer Management. It works fine.

However when I do it via disk part, example:

    select vdisk "vdisk location"
    attach vdisk readonly

I get an access denied error.

Whats the difference between attaching it via computer management and attaching it via diskpart?

I'm trying to automate the process of attaching VHDs, hence why I was trying disk part. Would there be an alternative way?

Hi everyone.  I've read a lot of posts about Error 5 but all the recommendations haven't worked.  When I run the initial robocopy it works fine, however when I run the same script again the next time, it fails with Error 5 access denied.  I did notice that the use I am using shows permissions in the parent folder as Special Permissions to This Folder Only.  Anyone have any ideas?  I'm using version 6.1.7601 that was downloaded from this site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2639043 and the command line: robocopy SOURCE TARGET /MIR /copy:DATSO /B /FFT /R:1 /W:1 /LOG:c:\robocopy\log1.txt

    Windows Server NTFS Permissions Issues

    Hello,

I recently created an AD new user account that is a member of the Domain Admins and Enterprise Admins groups.  I'm having issues when accessing folder shares on our servers when logged onto servers using this new account.  The folders have the local Administrators group NTFS rights set to Full Control, but when I attempt to open a folder I receive this message: "You don't currently have permissions to access this folder.  Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder."

Share permissions are set for Everyone Full Control.

I have recently discovered that the issue occurs on servers without folder shares too.

PCIe SSD + Storage Spaces = HUGE read performance drop?

So I'm seeing some strange, slow behavior with a simple Storage Spaces pool with only a pair of mirrored drives.  I've seen lots of folks having problems with SS, but most are issues with parity spaces.

I've got a new Dell R730xd with 4 of their 400GB nvme ExpresFlash SSDs.  The machine also has a PERC card with a bunch of 15K rpm SAS drives and will be used for SQL Server. (and a pair of E5-2643v3 xeons and 256GB ram)

This is running Windows Server 2012R2 with all the latest patches.  I've used both Storage Spaces / pools and traditional windows disk management to create a mirrored pair of these drives.  I also tested a single drive by itself.  The SS volume actually showed huge promise for a moment where it was obviously reading simultaneously from both drives.  These are some of the fastest SSDs available now, so these results for just using a pair of them are pretty awesome.  Using the old-school windows disk mirroring does show a performance penalty vs. a bare drive, but it's not drastic, so it's probably what I'll be forced to use unless I can fix the problem.

*note I later rebuilt this pool using a 4k physical & logical sector size hoping that was the culprit, but it didn't help.  It sorta looks like I'm running into some PCIe bus contention, possibly overloading the backplane. *shrug*

You can see the PS syntax used to create this here:
    photobucket image

And here's what a single drive looks like by itself:

    Cannot add disk space

We have a virtual machine server that has a C: (OS), D: (data) partitions. I added unallocated space to the server as the C: (OS) partition is low on disk space. It will not let me add more disk space to the server using disk management.

The C: and D: partitions are setup as a simple volume on one hard drive. How can I add additional disk space to the server to avoid it potentially crashing.

Accessing shared folder created on 2003 server asking for credentials on windows 2008 R2 server

    Hello All,

I am very confused with one of the issue I am dealing with and now I am running out with the ideas so now I need your help to troubleshoot that issue.

Issue is that I have a single forest but two domains. Both domains have two way trusts etc. I have shared some folders in domain A on windows 2003 server which is perfectly fine on accessing on windows 2003 server on domain B and not asking any credentials but same folders I am trying to access is asking for credentials on windows 2008 r2 server.

Interesting thing is when I have shared a folder on windows 2008 r2 server its accessing fine on both domains vise versa and on even accessing fine in windows 2003 servers with no credentials requirement.

So I know for fact that trust relationship of domains and all that are fine.

What confusing me is that why shared folder on Domain A windows 2003 Server is asking for credentials on Domain B windows 2008 r2 server?

Please can anyone help on this matter as this is very important and one of the P2 at this moment due to this issue.

    Many Thanks

    Ali

Folders keep moving to System volume folder which is hidden

    Dear All,

I am experiencing crisis in the infrastructure

I had virus infection and I had recovered from it "not completely" - the problem is folders keeps moving to hidden System volume folder

I tried working with security essential and it found that I have myfiles.exe infection

I blocked all executable files from the system - re installed new OS

I still get this problem that folders moved to system volume folder

from event viewer - after blocking exe files

user UUUUUUU  attempted to save D:\xxx.exe on D:\ on server SSSSS  This file matches the "Executable Files" file group which is not permitted on the system.

the xxx.exe name is the name of folder which then moved to system volume folder trying to put exe file on its place

    please advice for urgent remediation

    folder redirection directory change

    hello,

i am an ict technician at a school in belgium.
i have a problem with folder redirection, orginaly the folder redirection was configured for SOME of the users f.e:
    my document to \\dc1\homedir\%username%\my documents

now the following problem , my dc1 storage was not enough to keep up with the place of the documents etc

2 weeks ago all of my users have folder redirection to \\dc2\homedir\%username%\my documents.
for the "new users" that didnt used the dc1 before is their no problem but for the users that did use the dc1 is their a problem.
the sync center doesnt remove the \\dc1 location and gives conflicts.
the sync center gives the following locations : \\dc1 and \\dc2.
also when they create a word document and save it under my documents they somethimes get an error, file corrupted or path unfindable. or when they download something it sais u dont have the rights to open while they just downloaded it.
also somethimes f.e they get no icons on the desktop or on the start menu they are just white icons.

the only option i know for now is to delete the user profile on the local pc , log in again.
the user get an temp. account, i log in to my admin again and delete the .bak from the registry
log in again with the new user and the sync center is allright.
also theirs no more problem with word or what so ever.
but this is insane because we have allot of users and allot of pc's its almost impossible to go from pc to pc to remove the users.

    thanks in advance !

    greeting

quota for shared and folder redirection error

I am after a bit of advise about SBSconsole 2008. we have a server that crashed and now in sbs Console whenever I try to add a new user it fails on setting quotas. when I try and edit by double clicking any of the 70 odd exisiting users in sbs console I get error messages.  firstly I get a pop up saying" cannot get quota for shared folder" with a close button then when I close that I get another message saying "the folder redirection quota for the user account cannot be retrieved".  if I right click on the user and edit from there I can edit ok and the changes save and as far as I can tell all the hared folders are working fine and the users can still access I just cannot add any new users.

any advise I can get would be greatly appreciated

    thanks
