my verbatim external drive 1.8 terabite does not show on my pc
Extending C: on windows server 2008 standard
I shrank the D: drive and moved all the data to the new space created after I formatted and gave the space a drive letter G:. I deleted the drive space D: and ended up with the free space that I wanted to extend the C: drive into. When I right click on the C: the extend is still greyed out. Is there a difference between free space and unallocated space. I also tried to use diskpart and it tells me there is no empty space available. Please help.
Attempting to use "backup and Restore" giver error message
In November 2014 I backed up my PC ( see below ) onto a 2TB ecternal drive ( Lacie). This ok and can restore. Spare space 1.2TB
Now when I attempt to Backup again, using Windows Backup and restore, with same settings I get an error message :
"The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open" This appears after some time of activity. There is no mention of WHICH file causes the problem. I have repeated with different settings ie with part backups only, or just one drive only.
The PC runs Windows 7 ( 64 bit) there is an SSD c: drive and a d: drive mostly data with some programs installed here.
I would very much appreciate some advice.

WS2012 Dedup -ThrottleLimit what is?
Hi, anyone familiar with the following dedup parameter for ws2012? Technet says it specifies the maximum concurrent operations. Does that mean threads or iops operations?
-ThrottleLimit<Int32>
Knowing that I'm trying to setup a manual scrubber job to process much faster then what the auto scheduler has setup for a job.

Deduplication vs FSRM hard quotas
I was reading about deduplication on Windows Server 2012 R2 when I found this limitation:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/library/hh831454.aspx
"Creating a hard quota on a volume root folder that also has deduplication enabled is not supported. When a hard quota is present on a volume root, the actual free space on the volume and the quota restricted space on the volume are not the same. This may cause deduplication optimization jobs to fail.
Creating a soft quota on a volume root that has deduplication enabled is supported. When FSRM quotas encounter a deduplicated file, File Server Resource Manager accounts for it based on the file’s logical size. Quota usage (including any quota thresholds) does not change when a file is processed by deduplication. All other FSRM quota functionality, including volume-root soft quotas and quotas on subfolders, work normally when using deduplication."
I'm not sure how I should interpret this.
I see two possible ways:
1) Hard quotas are unsupported ONLY if applied on the root of a deduplicated volume and OK on folders stored on that same volume.
2) Only soft quotas are supported.
Which one is the right way to understand this ? (I prefer the first one ;) ).
Thanks

dfsr files does not replicate
Hi,
We're running dfsr on 2008R2 servers to replicate files, and I discovered that some files are just not replicated.
These files are not temporary files (checked using fsutil), and not filtered by file mask define on replicated folder properties (ususally ~*, *.bak, *.tmp).
It looks like a dfsr db corruption, but I don't know how to solve this. I don't know how to reset the db as some members are domain controllers.
Here's the configuration:
server1 and server2 are 2008R2 domain controllers. The replication group is ks2share-idcl.
- on server 1: file REPL-ERROR.pdf is modified
- on server 2: file not present
below is the dfsr.log output for each server.

DFS ignore deletions
Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I have setup one way DFS, well one way in which the replicated folders on the hub server are marked as read-only, so deleting from the hub is not feasible.
However and forgive me for asking a dense question but! I would like to keep the replication going as is which works brilliantly but if a deletion is made on the 'source' server ideally if the file has already been replicated to the hub then the file would be deleted from source but stay on the hub, allowing me to go back to various points in time. I am not sure this is possible, is the best way of doing this so please feel free to slap me and point me in the right direction.
If DFS is not suitable for what I am trying to achieve then I thought I would simply script ( using Robocopy ) a simple file copy operation on an hourly basis or similar.
Sharing a folder with specific users/group
I am trying to make 3 different shared folders for 3 different groups on Windows server 2008 R2. I have tried creating 3 folders in C:\, and then share it with the specific groups. The problem I have is that even though I have only given read and write permissions
to the specific group members, the other group members(from the 2 other groups) can still read and write in that folder. Which is not supposed to happen. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this?
PS: I am quite new to this...

Error when creating new DFS Namespace
Hello,
I have 2 new server 2012 r2 VM files servers (FS1 and FS2) which are operating in a failover cluster (FS-CL1). There is a single clustered disk (E:) which contains the file shares and is passed back and forth between the file servers as it should depending
on availability.
I'm attempting to create a namespace such that instead of having my users browse \\fs-cl1\share1 to connect to the shares located on the clustered disk, I'm hoping to achieve a domain based namespace (\\MYDOMAIN.COM\share1) using DFS Namespace.
When walking through the new dfs namespace wizard on either FS1 or FS2 I can create the share namespace fine if the share is located on the local disk C: of either machine. If I configure the namespace to point to a location on E: I'm prompted with an error:
"\\MYDOMAIN.COM\share1: The namespace server \\FS1\share1 cannot be added. This shared resource does not exist"
Any help would be great appreciated.
Thanks.
File Access - Audit trail
Hi,
Apologies in advance if the question is in the wrong section and please bear with me as I am a novice in windows/servers.
I am a user, part of a domain and have a number of files stored locally on my hard drive which syncs with the office server whenever I am in work or connect by VPN remotely. I also have access to a number of folders and files stored somewhere in the domain, available as a shared folder and also on sharepoint.
I want to copy some files from my local "mydocs" folder and some from the shared hard drive. These are not sensitive or confidential but I am worried if this may trigger any alarm as I am leaving my job in 2 weeks and may be monitored for files access (highly doubt it though)
Or if I copy the contents of a file and paste it to a local doc, would it leave a trace? Sorry if I am vague, all I need is to copy some files/contents for my records.
Thanks in advance,
D
NTFS File/Folder Access Denied
Have a folder structure with NTFS and share permissions set from the top down. A particular user cannot move files from X:\TopFolder\SubFolder\File1.ext into the X:\TopFolder\SubFolder.
NTFS permissons for the group the user is a member of has modify permissons. There are no conflicting deny permissions.
The user is the owner of the file mentioned above. Have tried on various local and VDI machines without success.
Cannot change NTFS permissions lightly as propagation can take a number of hours and affects different users in different time zones.
I have replicated the NTFS permissions on a test user and can replicate the problem exactly.
When the user attempts to move the file the following message is displayed:
"File Access Denied.
You need permission to perform this action.
You require permission from domain\<username> to perform this action, but the name displayed is the owner of the file which happens to be the same as the currently logged on user.
Throwing this out in case I have missed something. Doesn't happen for other users, not an AV issue as other users can access and move without issue.
Windows Server 2008 Migration
Hi,
Which will be easier, migrating from SBS 2008 to a new SBS 2008 or migration from 2008 to SBS 2011? or should I say less complicated migration?
Thank You
WINSXS - Removal Of Very Old Data
My Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 server is becoming very full and I'd like to free up some space so I came across the WinSXS folder which is currently taking up 11.0GB also here is some other details:
- Entries since 2009 up to late 2014
- folders dated from 2009 - 2013 equal 8.2 GB
- Attempted Disk Cleanup option but unable to see information populated in "Service Pack Backup Files"
- Ran command dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded and got error message "Service Pack Cleanup can't proceed: No service pack backup files were found.
The operation completed successfully."
Question:
Is it safe to remove these files\folders within especially the older ones? If so, how do we remove these items safely. I've read several forums, and have followed directions but unsuccessful.
Thanks in advance :).
Will iSCSI intiator for Windows 2003 break when upgrading OS to Windows 2008 R2
Hello,
I'd like to know if iSCSI intiator for Windows 2003 break when upgrading OS to Windows 2008 R2. If so when we use the iSCSI initiator built in to Windows 2008 R2 will we need to reconfigure all File/Folder security or will that stay intact?
Thank you for your support!
Permissions needed to view and close open files
Hi all,
We have a 2012 R2 file server, and we would like to give Helpdesk permissions to view open files on that file server, and close them if necessary if someone complains that it is locked.
What is the minimum permissions needed to accomplish this as we do not want to give them Administrator group access.
Thanks
