Hi this question is a bit tricky to ask so let me explain the scenario to give you some sort of idea of what is going on:
All users on Windows 7 Professional in a 2K8 Domain connecting to File Server running Windows 2008.
User A has an open spreadsheet from a network share with Write access, this can be verified from Open Files on the Server.
User B comes along and opens the same spreadsheet and again has Write access. Once this happens User A has disappeared completely from Open Files on the server, but I can corroborate that the file is still open with Write permissions on the laptop.
This has been narrowed down just to a particular user so I'm sure it is an issue with their Laptop, but am just wondering if this issue has been seen before and is a known bug?
Many Thanks
hi friends
as wee see, in the ACL of all files & folders ,the account called "system" exist & usually has full permission.
what is the usage or benefit of this here ? if we remove system from here, which problems may occur? if possible please give me some examples.
thanks in advance
Hello People in the world:
We are having lot of problems (some of them solved :)) in our enviorment with DFS (no namespace). We have a source SERVER01 with Windows 2008, and a target SERVER02 with Windows 2008 R2 (both same language). We have 8GB of RAM and enought CPU (VMware background) so we think the resources is not a problem.
We have solved the siz stagging area issue, but know that we have 2 replicated folder (bidirectional) we cannot achieve the 100% of the replication state. Instead we have one of the folders with a size and a number of folders and files bigger than in the target, and the opposite in the other folder (more files and folders in the source!).
In the source SERVER01 we have a problem trying to access the DfsrPrivate folder, access denied. System has full permissions and we are logged with an admin domain user. In SERVER02 with the same user there is no problem.
We have (we think we have...) problems with network, it´s a WAN slow connection (10Mb/10Mbs with an VPN with firewalls), because we have several disconnections in the event viewer with events 5014 (Communications Stops, RPC server not available) and 5004 (in SERVER02).
DFSRDIAG backlog command displays that 12174 files in folder one (and 6523 in folder 2) are waiting to replicate (from SERVER01 to 02), shows first 100 of them, and says Operation its ok.
On the other way in the reports from the GUI it is displayed that we havent enought free space in SERVER02, when we have 100 GB at this moment, in which parameter iis based to display that error?.
So, our first problem is that the source and the target arent equal on size and number of files and folders, with the above mentioned errors.
Any suggest to review or something more to test?
thanks to all, greetings

Hi, i have a domain controller running Windows Server 2008 R2. This server name is DC01. When I try to access other file shares on a Server name FS01 or any computer on the network from that domain controller by typing \\FS01 or \\IP , it return the following error:
"Check the Spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified error.”
But when I try to access file shares in this DC01 from DC01 by typing \\DC01, actually it’s working.
I really need to access other servers share from DC01, what can I do ?
Hi,
We have the Domain in Windows 2003 Standard.
How can I restrict users from saving files in their Local PC?
Also, need to forced them to save the files in Network Location with permissions...
Thanks.

Because Microsoft are .... backwards .... I can't install Search Service on my Server Core 2012 R2 File Server. I would need to install the GUI on a server that has no need for a GUI. Anyway...
Can I create a "search" server that holds the feature and then clients will be able to have the network shares on the File Server indexed? If so how do I go about this? Or is there some other option/method?
Hello There,
There is a problem with the users accessing the file shares over the slow WAN Link so the solution is to enable Transparent Caching trough GPO.
I applied a GPO to enable this feature but does it also require me to enable Offline Caching on all the shared folders, please suggest.

We are currently in the middle of migrating our active directory from Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2 and are up to the part where we need to migrate DFS.
Not having done this before I have read an array of support articles from re-creating the domain based name space to using tools like dfsutil to transfer the name space to the new server.
What I would like to know is what is the recommended way of doing this with minimal impact and that won't break anything?
When I turn my computer on all I see is a blank screen with the mouse arrow showing.
I can move the mouse arrow around but the screen stays blank.
Can anybody inform me of what I may have to do to correct this problem?
Regards, PopC.

Hi! We're configuring a new 2012 server with File and Storage Services. The number of permissions options is confusing me. I do understand that permissions to the file system and to the file share(s) are two different things. This is where I'm confused:
I've created and shared a folder. I right click on the folder and choose Properties. I then click the sharing tab. There are two buttons here. One of them says "Share". If I click that, it says it's shared to Administrator and my user name. If I click the other button, "Advanced Sharing" and then "Permissions", it's shared for "Everyone".
Which one is it? Why are there two different permissions for folder sharing and which takes precedence?
Thanks!
Hi,
I am trying to give access permissions to a group of few users in Server 2012 R2 and no errors coming, but still the permissions are not effective. Please
help. Even using Administrator for logging in on connected machines not effective.
note : the same way worked in Server 2008. And now I am using Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation.
Please Help!
So I tried to connect to a share without really understanding how this tool works and messed up the Share and Storage Management. Now when I open this application all I get is an error window with this error...
\\server\share: The server's operating system version cannot be retrieved. The network address is invalid
Screenshot: http://imgur.com/CC8hRFC
I cannot close this error window or see the actual share information. Server Manager can still do the job, but how do I get Share and Storage Management back to normal??
Thanks in advance!!
I keep getting this error (in the subject) recently and it is offlining one of two volumes I have setup in storage spaces. I have two volumes (Cameras, and Data) and Cameras seems to be operating fine, while Data keeps offlining saying that it is out of room I guess. However I am only using 5TB out of 15TB.
The drive configuration is 7 3TB drives (which currently 1 has died which is why it's in degraded state, but this problem has been going on before it degraded)
Can someone help me figure out how to fix this? I have ordered 3 additional disks (1 to replace the bad disk and 2 in case I need to expand for whatever weird reason)
It just sounds weird that somehow I have ran out of space with only 5TB being used up. I noticed the number of columns is off between the two volumes too. Not quite sure why or how to fix that either.

can I use file screening to prevent users saving office documents and email documents on the desktop and documents folder.
these will be for their profiles that are in use on the RDS server, no folder redirection in place just standard profiles.
I have tried to create a screen path of c:\users\%username%\desktop but this doesn't work.
any help would be much appreciated.
thanks

Hello,
I have storage migration which requires some DFSR changes. I am unsure of how these changes will affect the DFSR DB and would like to get some thoughts. It’s is a bit complicated and hope this makes sense. This applies to Win 2008 R2 Sp1.
Here is the scenario. We have multiple fileservers for around 1500 users at 1 location. These servers store user H drive data and replicate to a DFS replica server in our DR site.
The 4 host (live) site servers are for users and broken down by last name.
Server1: UsersA-F
Server2 : UsersG-L
Server3: UsersM-R
Server4: UsersS-Z
There are only 2 replica site servers. So shares UsersA-F and UsersG-L replicate to a single server with separate drives for each.
The issue is that the host site drives are almost full. I have a new SAN mounted drives and plan to split off the data as such.
Server1: D:\UsersA-F becomes D:\UsersA-C and K:\UsersD-F. Server2: F:\UsersG-L becomes F:\UsersG-I and L:\UsersJ-L
The replica site has 2 new drives and will now store 4 drives of replicated data. UsersA-C, UsersD-F. UsersG-I, UsersJ-L.
I will just focus on 1 server for this – UsersA-F on server1. I have plenty of experience with Robocopy preseed and checking hashes.
Here are my high level steps:
- Delete D-F data from existing drive so it only holds A-C data
- Delete A-C data from new drive so that it only holds D-F data
The part that I’m unsure about is #6 - Un-share, re-name, re-share existing root shares.
The existing share is UsersA-F. I will have to re-name this share to UsersA-C which means I have to un-share it first. Then re-name, and then re-share. I have to do similar work on the replica side. I’m worried how this will affect the existing DFSR Database? When I create the new replication group, will it do the initial sync (check file hashes) like normal and then catch up on replication or will it get confused since the root is has been un-shared and re-named? The DFSR Database will see new replicated folders (A-F replaced by A-C and D-F). Will it just re-replicate everything over? That is my big worry.
Thank you!
hi friends
i am new to storage & i have no experience with NAS ((Network Attach storage)

thanks in advance
We are running a file server on windows server 2008 32 bit. This server is also our AD server. We want to move or migrate this to a new server running windows server 2012. How to do this?
I've got the information/way to migrate AD server to Windows server 2012.
