recreate file replication eventlog view

I am having
an issue and have no idea how it happened. We took over a domain and in the event viewer, there is no log area for File Replication Service. I understand that DFSRS has kind of replaced this service and replication is happening over the 4 DC's with no issues but I am wondering if I get the service started for peace of mind. Every DC does not have this application and service logs, event viewer.

What I have tried so far:Went into the system event log I see this error: A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the File Replication service to connect.

The service has been disabled on every server. I tried to enable it and above is the error I received when I tried to start it in the event viewer. I then proceeded to try to look in the registry and I noticed there were no entries HKLM/system/CurrentControlSet/Services/eventlog for the File Replication Service. I exported that File Replication Service and imported it into the 4 servers. I closed and reopened computer management and the file replication service event viewer showed up. It also was logging this Information log: The File Replication Service is starting. And then throwing this error: This domain controller has migrated to using the DFS Replication service to replicate the SYSVOL share. Use of the File Replication Service for replication of non-SYSVOL content sets has been deprecated and therefore, the service has been stopped. The DFS Replication service is recommended for replication of folders, the SYSVOL share on domain controllers and DFS link targets.

My next step was to try to register the dll files there were being used in the registry: %SystemRoot%\system32\els.dll (this one registered properly) C:\Windows\system32\ntfrsres.dll this one failed. I tried to replace the dll file but it said I need permissions from the TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file which is where I stopped.

Any ideas on what I should try next?

Enabling File server resource manager role

I want to enable the FRSM Role on my current in operation windows 2008 r2 file server to be able to run reports. My only concern is it is already a production file server with over a 1000 job folders and 1.4 gb of data and I don't want to mess up any of the active directory persons or access to the current file system. Will enabling this role affect the current operation for users? thanks.

Can a DFS Server be shut down in Windows Server 2012 R2 AD-Integrated DFS?

I am working on an AD-integrated Windows Server 2012 R2 DFS implementation for a client. All we're using at the moment is DFS-N. Given that, in Windows Server 2012 R2, the DFS metadata is stored in a BLOB in AD, if the DFS-N servers are shut down, will the namespace continue functioning? Or, do the DFS-N servers need to continue running after initial configuration to maintain access to the DFS shares?

Thank you.

Delay in Share access locally on windows 2008 r2

HI All,

Have been facing with an issue in which shares hosted on one of my server sometimes take a long time to open in explorer even if tried by IP/hostname/Fqdn..sometimes the lag is for more than 40sec ..It happens rarely once or twice in a month but causes issues with our processes..During the issue the delay in share access occurs from diff servers including locally on the server..tried from win xp/win7/windows 2003/windows 2012.

Some options were opted like disabling RSS,checksum,TCP/Ip offload ,firewall disabled,SMB patch but in vain.

Has anyone encountered such issues. Please let me know if anyone has any fix for the issue.

Windows Server 2008 R2 , Folder Sharing Issue

Hi all, i have a problem on my domain, the history starting from when i had i server with server 2008 r2 installed with the following roles installed on it (AD, DNS, DHCP, File). From 1 month i decided to install a new server 2008 r2 server to get (AD, DNS, DHCP) on the new server and leave the file server on the old one. i did the following exactly:

1) robocopy all my data on external HDD

2) Install a new server with 2008 r2

3) transfer all 5 roles to transfer the domain to the new server (MainDC)

4) issue (NETLOGON, SYSVOL) not transferred but i decided to reinitialize them again an now they are operating (MainDC)

5) re-create and re-configure a new GPOs and link it to my OUs

6) reinstall Old server operating system with a fresh installation of WIN 2008 R2 (FileServer)

7) join my domain with my domain credentials.

the issue when i tried to share folder on \\fileserver the permissions that i had set in sharing permissions are applied on the main shared folder and subfolders. the security settings are not applied. i.e. Say i'm sharing \\fileserver\\MainFolder with sharing permission for Authenticated Users that can read, so every one can read this main shared folder, if i set security permission for \\fileserver\MainFolder\User1 that User1 can Read\Write\Modify. User1 can not perform this processes when accessing it from Network Share, i tried alot of steps from topics online get ownership for folder, remove inheritance from parent folder, applying changes for child objects, i tried also to construct a new folder structure but also the same issue, i tried another host PC, also i get the same issue.

I'm guessing their is a setting in the default GPO that i have to change to enable applying security settings. please help me solving this issue

DFS Not replicating Txt files only

Hi,

Looking for some advice on a DFS replication issue.

Scenario:

2 x win 2003 r2 server

1 x win 2008 R2 server

Simple 3 way replication group. When i add a something.txt file it doesnt replicate, if i add a something.pdf file it replicates within a second. If i rename something.txt to something.pdf it will replicate.

I have checked the replication filters and it is default with ~*, *.bak, *.tmp

I have also check fsutil and the file attributes show it is not classified as temp file.

Also I have run a replication propagation test and report (and a health report) and all checks out ok.

Any reason why txt files wouldnt replicate?

Many events for ID 14554 appearing in System event log

I have two 2008 R2 domain controllers and one new 2012 R2 server I just promoted to DC a few days ago. One of the 2K8R2 servers holds all the FSMO roles. The new 2K12R2 DC is also an additional namespace server for domain-based namespace. The DFS seems to be working fine, but about every 20 minutes the following 14554 event for 'DfsSvr' is logged:

The DFS Namespaces service has successfully initialized the shared folder that hosts the namespace root. Shared folder: ourDFSnamespace

This event does not appear on either of the two 2K8R2 DCs.

2003 server cannot access all files on 2012 r2

We Copied files from 2003 EE SP2 using secure copy version 7 to a 2012 R2 server. When opening from a server 2003 computer opening files one level below the root folder it gives an error message of “make sure a disk is in the drive you specified”

Example

L:\FTP\Tapio\dx4g220500.txt - doesn’t work

L:\Tapio\ dx4g220500.txt - works

Making a new text file in the folder you are able to open the file and save with no issue

Trying to copy the file inside the same folder gives “cannot copy – the request is not supported."

Renaming the file works – however still can’t open the file.

Default Data Deduplication Optimisation job with "StopWhenSystemBusy" does not work correctly

$

I have configured Data Deduplication on Windows Server 2012 R2 and enabled on a volume.

Data Deduplication creates a default Optimisation task called "BackgroundOptimization".

I have placed files on my volume, and started the job manually. It succeeds but does nothing. InPolicyFiles still shows zero.

If I edit this job in Task Scheduler and remove the /backoff switch (StopWhenSystemBusy), then start the job manually again, it succeeds, and also incrememnts the InPolicyFiles.

At the same time, the CPU and RAM on the server is fairly idle, with no users on the system.

Is there a problem with the StopWhenSystemBusy? Should we not use this parameter, and simply run the task out of business hours instead? Has anyone seen this before?

This happens on two Windows Server 2012 R2 servers, so is reproducable here.

Can't access FTP using "Map Network Drive" via IIS in Server 2012

Need help!!
I have 2 Servers (consider the names as A & B) in my environment both running with Server 2012 Std Editions, with IP's in 192.168.235.X ranges

All I want is to set up a FTP Server.
Hence I have installed the IIS, FTP roles and services properly in the Server A. The firewall ports and all are opened for port 21. I was able to set up the FTP Server successfully in this Server A.

The main issue is described as below:
I have shared a folder from the Server B and mapped shared drive as X in Server A. I have added the Administrator and Everyone as security groups. So, I have created another FTP site and pointed the mapped network drive X as the destination of this newly created FTP site.

While I try to access the newly FTP site via IE, ftp://192.168.253.X im getting authentication prompt.
"To log on to this FTP Server, type a user name and password"
I have tried the Admin user name and password but still its not accepting the same also tried by checking the anonymous authentication on but still the same.

FTP Authentication - Anonymous Authentication - Allowed
FTP Authorization Rules - Anonymous Users - Allowed

So, in general I would like to know the reason why the FTP Server is not working when I changed the destination to the mapped drive while it was working for the local drive which was present in the same Server.

Thanks in advance,
Qucik reponses are much appriciated

Dedup candidate - User Profile Disks (UPD) for RDS vhdx files

I'm trying to determine if User Profile Disk files are good candidates for dedup. I see that with server 2012 r2, VDI disks are good candidates but other running Hyper-V VMs are not. With both server 2012 and 2012 R2, VHD(X) libraries are also good candidates. I don't see UPD mentioned anywhere, though. Any insight is appreciated. I'd be deduping on a 2012 R2 server BTW.

Thx,

DFSR not replicating files during a full Windows Server Backup

$

I posted this in the backup forum yesterday but no response so will try here.

We have 3 2008 R2 servers and have noticed that files are not replicated during a full WSB, I have tested a file from ServerA and it did not replicate to ServerB while ServerB is being backed up, it does replicate to ServerC. A replication propagation test report from ServerA shows the test file to be incomplete. All servers are 100 % patched and running all hotfixes from Article ID: 968429 except 2663685. Can someone please help.

Delete all "desktop.ini" files and all empty "_vti_cnf" directories on every PC on my network

Hi,

I looking to do two thinks below:

1) forfiles command in a batch job to delete all desktop.ini files on all PC on my network. (for simplicity, lets just say I only have two PC on my 8 PC network.

Below is what I'm trying and is not working in a batch file, (C is PC1, and E is on PC2) I was assuming below would delete all desktop.ini in all directories and sub-directories, hidden or read only - forced? (plus a few other parameters - shot in the dark) There is no error message it just does not work, desktop.ini is still there.

forfiles.exe /p "C:" /s /m desktop.ini /d -1 /c "cmd /c del /f /s /ar /as /ah /aa @file"

forfiles.exe /p "E:" /s /m desktop.ini /d -1 /c "cmd /c del /f /s /ar /as /ah /aa @file"

Any suggestions?

2) Delete all empty "_vti_cnf" directories on all PC's on my network. For this one I'm open to suggestions. I'm not opposed to using the "Erase" or "Delete" commands..or any others which will work. I'm going to run the end result batch file in scheduled tasks.

Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated.

In File & Storage Services on Server 2k12, I have create my Share folder.

On the share folder, I create Permissions for the Security Group on the Child Domain to access the folder.

The primary domain and the child domain admin can access the folder.

On the workstation connected to the Child domain, I get an access denied message.
