Can I kill a DFS primary target folder ?

Hi folks,

Haven't worked with DFS in years, and we're in the process of retiring an old fileserver. We have a domain namespace set up (Windows 2000 compatibility) on two DCs. All shares are accessed using the DFS shares.

We have a bunch of DFS shares replicated on two file servers (not DCs). At the time of creation (before I joined the company), some of these replication groups had the  server that is to be retired as the primary and others the server we're keeping. We're not sure which is which in many cases.

What is the cleanest way of going about this ? Do I just shut down the server to be retired and then remove the replication groups ? Am I better off deleting the target folders pointing to the server to be retired and then delete the replication groups before I shut down the server ?

I did a test this afternoon where I removed the target folder that I knew had been the primary on the server to be retired. I then deleted the associated replication group (funny how that didn't happen automagically when I deleted the target folder). I waited a couple of hours, and then created a new file in the folder on the server we're keeping, and lo and behold, it got replicated to the server to be retired, even though the target folder to that server no longer existed in the DFS namespace.

How long does it take for these changes to stick ? Did I do something wrong ?

Thanks !

Felix
