How Can i replace HDD with New SSD in storage spaces without creating new storage spaces & Backup/restore.

Hi,

I am using Storage spaces for file server using below configuration:

4 TB HDD---2 Nos ---with Mirror

1 TB SSD-2 Nos--with Mirror

File System is: ReFs

Provisioning is: Fixed

Now file server Disk Usage=2.6 TB in 4.57

Server OS: Windows server 2012 R2

Now i am getting slow speed due to usage of HDD and want to move my all data only in SSD.

For the same i want to use 4 New 1 TB SSD with Mirror instead of 4 TB  2 Nos. of HDD. so that i can get 3 TB Space on SSD.

Pl. suggest how can i rebuilt storage spaces without creating new storage spaces and backup/restore.

Thanking u

Error 87 - Parameter is incorrect - after copying using robocopy /sec /secfix

Recently i´ve migrated an old fileserver to a new one, like several other previous migrations, all of then using robocopy with parameters /sec and /secfix (not copyall)

ArcServe stopped finishing backups (firts time i see this in more than 15 years) with error 87 Parameter is incorrect, wich indicates that this is the error from Windows being passed directlry to Arcserve  in its error message

The error only occurs on volumes robocopied, not in the native file system

The following article shows the most accurate description of the problem and looks like fits perfeclty in my case...

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2459083

but..

how to solve the problem?

i´ll have to re-apply, for instance, all owners again?

"...

On the CIFS file server, use the appropriate tools to correct the security information for affected files, and ensure that all affected files have both an Owner SID and a Primary Group SID.

..."

I´ve tried two procedures:

1) reset all permissions from root folder, forcing the appropriate permissions again, trying to "refresh" permissions

2) reset all owner on all files in the folder

3) Duplicated an existing  folder, creating a new tree of files, deleting the original  and renaming the new/duplicated folder with the original name

nothing...ArcServe error is still:

Failed to read data from file: SAS_0307_Rev.0_11-21-2011_Reply.pdf RC=87, The parameter is incorrect.

WIndows explorer and end users are able to use the files with no problem

An example, no "users" because is a a folder whom "SERVER\Users" can´t have permissions

Happy Monday!

I have server with dedup enabled, but the are not space savings. It turns out that the optiomization job doesn't process anything and does not finish. How can I see where the issue is? I checked the Deduplication/Diagnostic and Operational Logs but I don't see a clear indication of the issue.

I have a similar set up and dedup works there.

DFSR Conflict folder

Hi there,

I am running Server 2012 R2 with DFS installed. I am having issues since I have a 3 node DFS cluster. for some reason my physical server which is running two of my 3 DFS virtual servers rebooted abrubtly. Now I got all my files being replicated all over the place and most of the files being placed in the conflict folder. The LUN ended up with no space and I dont know if increasing storage will help.. Is there a way to delete the staging and conflict folders manually? Also by doing so - will I lose any data or do harm?

Dual-parity vs single parity w/ spare capacity

$

Hi all,

I'm trying to build a home storage box with two SSDs and eight 2TB spinners. Server 2016 TP5 lets me combine SSD mirror and HDD single- or dual- parity capacity into a single, tiered volume. This is awesome. I am very happy with the performance for my use case, but I need some advice:

  • For my HDD tier, I can use parity or dual parity. If I could use 7 disks' worth of space and single parity, does that mean I effectively have a striped hot-spare disk? If so, how do I ensure that capacity is locked in to hot-spare usage? The UI doesn't seem to have a "leave one disk's worth of space as spare capacity" option.
  • If I make a single-parity volume with 6x2TB= 12TB usable, it will consume 7x2TB=14TB total space. Will that be striped over all 8 disks? If I then lose a disk, will it automatically populate that space with repaired data?
  • How does column size work with this? Should I make a single-parity 7-column set? Or 8 columns?

In other words - please help me figure out how spare capacity, striped hot-spare capacity and column count relate to each other.

Poor Windows 7 client performance on 2012 R2 servers

We recently upgraded all of our file servers from standalone 2003 and 2008R2 servers to a 2012R2 environment with DFS. The day after we cut everything over to the DFS namespace and 2012R2 servers we were overwhelmed with calls saying that opening office files, saving office files and attaching office files to email was very slow and would at times error out with a timeout error.  All of the slowness was experienced on our windows 7 clients. The issue was not occurring on Windows 8 clients and up.

Servers are 2012R2 running on VMWare 6.0.  VMWare host are HP DL380 G7's.  All software is up to date as of the today.

I checked antivirus and made sure that it wasn't causing any issues on the server.  I also confirmed that the servers resources were okay. The server was doing fine with CPU, RAM, Network and disk activity.  After reading a lot of articles with similar issues I decided to disable SMBv2 and v3 on the 2012R2 servers.

After disabling SMBv2 & v3 the Windows 2012R2 servers the issue went away.

Is this best practice for a Windows 2012R2 environment running Windows 7 clients? I can't believe that my solution is to go back to SMBv1. There must be a way to happily have Windows 7 clients access 2012R2 file servers over SMBv2.

Any help or suggestions would be very appreciated.

File sharing between untrusted domains

Hello,

I have four different domains, and there is no trust between any of them. I want to transfer files from Domain A to Domain B, C and D.

The way I can see this be done securely is by installing a SSH server, such as for example Bitvise on a Server in Domain A. Then I would have to install a SFTP client (such as Win SCP) on the clients I want to transfer files to in Domain B, C and D.

Unfortunately there is no built-in SSH server/SFTP Client on Windows servers, so I have to rely on third party products.
But can you guys think of any other way I can accomplish this task, without creating trusts between the different domains?

Work Folders quit syncing

We have a few Win7 machines where Work Folders just stops.  Looking at the logs, we find the following errors:

svchost (860) {E2043322-8412-471B-ABA3-AF0C18D2BC3E}: Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -1216.

svchost (860) {E2043322-8412-471B-ABA3-AF0C18D2BC3E}: Database recovery failed with error -1216 because it encountered references to a database, 'C:\Users\User1\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WorkFolders\Metadata\meta.edb', which is no longer present. The database was not brought to a Clean Shutdown state before it was removed (or possibly moved or renamed). The database engine will not permit recovery to complete for this instance until the missing database is re-instated. If the database is truly no longer available and no longer required, procedures for recovering from this error are available in the Microsoft Knowledge Base or by following the "more information" link at the bottom of this message

The meta.edb file is missing.  How do we recover from that?  How do we figure out why the meta.edb file is deleted?

If the user logs into a new machine, sync works and copies the files down from the server, etc.

How to rebalance a Cluster Virtual Disk in Windows Server 2016

Hi,

I've a Windows Server 2016 with Storage Spaces Direct configured.

After a disk failure of one of the disks (successful repaired) the vDisk now reports the status of "needs rebalance".

Any idea on how to fix this?

Repair-Virtualdisk or Repair-StoragePool didn't worked, also Optimize-StoragePool did not work.

Adding W2012R2 namespace server to domain-based 2008 namespace

$

Hello,

We have one 2008 domain-based namespace. Namespace has 3 DFS namespace servers (2x WS2008R2 + 1x WS2008RTM)

WS2008R2 servers are going to be replaced with WS2012R2 servers in near future.

Question: Can I deploy WS2012R2 server as DFS namespace server for 2008 domain-based namespace?

Thank you already!!

Folder Redirection On DFS Namespace.

$

I am using folder redirection to DFS Namespace through Group Policy. The folder target for DFS Namespace are NAS filers(VNX and NETAPP). The user’s Desktop, Documents and Favorites folders are redirected to DFS namespace via GPO which is configured on the basis of Group membership (Advanced Mode and Not Basic). Please refer to the following Technet Article:-

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj649078(v=ws.11).aspx.

I am in the process of moving users data from the exisitng NAS filer to a new one.Basically  I want to change the location of the redirected folders to a different DFS Namespace which contains a different NAS filer(NETAPP).

Please refer to the following technet article:-

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj649080(v=ws.11).aspx.

A pictorial representation is demonstrated with the picture  and the content below:-

User A’s Folder Redirected to DFS NameSpace:-abc.corp.com\xyz$\DEF\0

User B’s Folder Redirected to DFS NameSpace:-abc.corp.com\pqr$\DEF\0

Since the folder Target are NFS filers, they cannot participate in DFS replication.

I want to change users A folder location from abc.corp.com\xyz$\DEF\0” to “abc.corp.com\pqr$\DEF\0”.

What is the most optimum and best way to achieve this without creating problems for users?

Can I add folder “ frepdef-fs01.abc.corp.coml\home-fren-0$” to DFS Namespace abc.corp.com\xyz$\DEF\0 as a target after copying user data through Robocopy. This will avoid any change that needs to be carried out to Group Policy Objects and Group Membership. I have just used 2 users for demonstration purpose. I have around 12000 users to move from different namespaces to NETAPP.I was wondering whether this approach would work. After data has been copied I would go ahead and disable the folder target “frrmdef-fs01.abc.corp.coml\home-fren-0$ in the namespace “abc.corp.com\xyz$\DEF\0.

Please feel free to write to me in case you need more information.Any Help is much appreciated.

NFS/NTFS file mapping problem

$

Hi,

I have setup a Win 2012R2 NFS server. The usermapping is done via AD. I am able to mount the share via NFS 4.1 on a linux box., however I am not able to let any other user except the NTFS share owner access the share. On the linux side the permissions look like this:

drwx----- <owner> <group>

And the NTFS security for the share shows there are other users and groups which all have got their respective uidNumber/gidNumber AD attributes mapped to the same numbers on the linux side. Eg

gidNumber xxxx
.
.
uidNumber yyyy

and on linux side

/etc/passwd:
user:x:yyyy:xxxx::/home/user:/bin/bash
/etc/group:
group:x:xxxx:
I have also enabled the ID mapper on the linux side, as per description in a Microsoft blog post. The linux client can connect to the AD server and lookup the owner which is mapped to the respective user on linux, but no other user can access the share.
Any idea what I am doing wrong ?

Restricting users on a file share subfolder

$

We have a typical file share, root - sub1-sub2-sub3. Permissions are inherited and we use the Domain Users group to give all the user permissions, which is Modify. We want to restrict sub3 to a small set of users. We do not want anyone else to see the contents of sub3. Here is what I did:

1. Create an AD security group for the set of users.

2. On sub 3 go into properties-permissions-advanced permissions-change permissions and uncheck include inheritable permissions.

3. Go back to Security - Edit permissions and add the AD security group with all permissions except full control. Remove Domain users.

After doing this access is denied for the security group users. When I check Effective permissions it says they do have the permissions I assigned the group. I thought this is how I used to do this but obviously I am missing something.

Thanks

iSCSI setup

Hi all,

I have a hyper-v host with a few VMs running windows server 2012 r2.

The hyper-v host is not on the domain. One of the VMs is a domain controller, DNS, DHCP, another VM is a file server and another is just a WSUS server.

I am wanting to play around with iSCSI.... Is there a way i can plug in a removable USB drive into the hyper-v host then use the hyper-v host to make the removable USB drive an iSCSI target for my VMs to connect to using the windows iSCSI initiator?

Or am i going to need some proper storage to do this.

Basically i have a lab setup and i am wanting to test a few things for an exam i have soon.

Could i get away with buying a basic NAS box as storage to play the role as an iSCSI target?

Thanks in advance.

Problem with Windows Server shares

So here's the scenario.  I just took a job managing a decently sized network (2500ish users).  My predecessor had a "patch it quick and move on" or "I'll just wait until it really breaks to do something about it" phiolsophy, which is very different from my own.  Anyway, he had a problem with a file and print server getting people so they could access all the shared stuff on the box.  He turned off some service (uncertain which one, had something to do with Papercut and their support tech turned it back on) and turned on the guest account which just gave everyone access.  The problem was that with this service off, the print quota software wasn't tracking prints.  Once it was turned on, it would track prints again, but non-domain computers could no longer access the server.  It wouldn't even prompt for credentials when accessing the server, it just failed.  When I would UNC path to the server it would show all the shared devices and folders, but would error out when trying to open one.

I turned the guest account off and now it prompts me for credentials, but no credentials I give it will work.  I also can no longer see the shared devices and folders, I get prompted for credentials as soon as I attempt to UNC to the server.  I created users on the local machine and tried server\username and that didn't work.  I've tried several different accounts using domain\username to no avail.  I even tried adding my domain user to the local user CP and set myself as a local administrator and it wouldn't work.  No matter what credentials I give it, it will not accept them.  I've checked the security settings against other servers on the domain and they all match.  I've checked the date and time.  I went through the gpresults to see if it was a problem with the group policies, but it's getting the same policies as all the other servers in it's OU and none of the other servers have this problem.  I've turned the Windows firewall OFF.  I checked the share permissions and folder security on the shares and they're all setup properly.

The server is running Windows Server 2012 and is a member server on a domain.  The server is running inside a VMware farm and many other servers don't have this problem connecting through the same virtual switch.  None of the other servers on this domain are showing these kinds of symptoms.

I'm at a loss as to what I should even try next.
